Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect around the world. In the United States and other developed countries, there are medical centers with trained specialists to repair these defects. However, this is not the case in developing countries like Kenya where children suffering from conditions like a hole in the heart or damage caused to the heart by rheumatic fever often go undiagnosed until it is too late.

The Real Situation
How THAP Helps

Seeking a miracle, these families are referred by their doctors to Take Heart Association Project (THAP) in Nairobi, Kenya, an organization that has been helping families secure the medical care they need for their children to live healthy lives for 20 years.

Latest News

All of us with THAP were shocked at the passing of our Founder and Executive Director, Peter Mbogo Kamau, on December 1, 2016 in a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. We have since learned that he was suffering from severe malaria with serious heart and kidney complications.

Please know that the THAP USA board remains committed to continuing Peter's legacy of more than 20 years helping children in Kenya who suffer from heart problems. Since he founded THAP in Kenya and in the US, close to 200 children received life-saving heart surgeries and hundreds more got the medical care they needed.

As we prepare for the next Hearts of East Africa medical mission team to Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya, we want to thank them for assisting 24 THAP patients over the years. Here are two of the children helped in the past.

Bleaton’s successful surgery was performed on February 8, 2016. He is doing very well, currently on medications and cardiac reviews.

Assumpta’s surgery took place on February 1, 2016 and was a success. She is now on cardiac review clinics and medications that allows her to attend school.

A Thank you from Margaret

In March 2014, Margaret, then age 10, underwent a successful heart surgery at the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan. This hospital, founded by Dr. Strada and the Italian NGO, Emergency, was featured on the CBS news program, 60 Minutes. She is doing fine and currently does not need any medications. THAP insures that Margaret will be monitored by doctors in Nairobi.

Please take a moment to view the video of Margaret expressing her gratitude.

201 heart surgeries, more than 500 children have received
medical care they required, and 412 patients and their
caregivers have stayed at our Family Support Center.
Please do your part to help THAP's Hearts for Kids Program.
